  1. Computer Basics 101 (Basics of Computer Software and Hardware)

    Prerequisite: None. This introductory course will familiarize you with the computer and its terminology. Computer terms such as RAM, ROM, terminal, hardware, software, motherboard, bit, and byte will be explained. You will learn what a computer is, how it works, and its basic components. You will learn about some of the ways a computer can help you in your work and in your personal life. Two hours.

  2. Buying a PC 101 (What to Look for When Purchasing a PC)

    Prerequisite: Computer Basics 101. (not a hands-on course) This short course will help you determine what hardware and software will meet your personal and/or professional needs. One hour.

  3. Keyboarding 101 (Touch Keyboarding for Computer Applications)

    Prerequisite: None. This course is designed for the non-typist or the typist who wishes to learn the "touch" system of keyboarding. It will be done on a PC, and emphasis will be on using the PC keyboard in relation to computer software. Eight hours.

  4. DOS 101 (Learning to Use the PC Operating System)

    Prerequisite: Computer Basics 101 or familiarity with computer components and terminology. This hands-on course will teach you about the PC operating system (DOS), the eight essential commands--FORMAT, DIR, MD, CD, RD, COPY, REN, and DEL, and more. You will learn about the tree structure of a disk and how to organize your data files for easy access and retrieval. Even if you prefer handling your files through Windows, this course is important in helping you understand the underlying operating system. Six hours.

  5. Communications 111 (Learning to Use Eudora)

    Prerequisite: Computer Basics 101 or familiarity with computer components and terminology. This course will teach you the basics of Eudora, the new E-mail (electronic mail) system that is available through SSU's UNIX server. You will learn how to access your mail, how to send and reply to messages, how to send electronic files, how to print your mail, and how to make nicknames so you can easily send messages to multiple receivers (such as a class or committee). Three hours.

  6. Communications 131 (Learning to Use Outlook)

    Prerequisite: Computer Basics 101 or familiarity with computer components and terminology. This course will teach you the basics of Outlook, the new E-mail (electronic mail) system that is available through SSU's UNIX server. You will learn how to access your mail, how to send and reply to messages, how to send electronic files, how to print your mail, and how to make nicknames so you can easily send messages to multiple receivers (such as a class or committee). Three hours.

  7. Windows 101 (Using Windows 3.1)

    Prerequisites: Computer Basics 101 and DOS 101. This introductory course teaches Windows concepts and terminology, how to communicate with Windows through the mouse and the keyboard, and how to handle disk and file management. Ten hours.

  8. Windows 111 (Using Windows 95)

    Prerequisites: Computer Basics 101 and DOS 101. This course will teach you the fundamentals of using Windows 95; how to modify the Windows 95 desktop; and file, document, and folder management using Windows 95 Explorer. Ten hours.

  9. Windows 121 (Using Windows 98)

    Prerequisites: Computer Basics. This course will teach you the fundamentals of using Windows 98; how to modify the Windows 98 desktop; and file, document, and folder management using Windows 98 Explorer. Ten hours.

  10. Windows 131 (Using Windows NT/2000)

    Prerequisites: Computer Basics 101. This course will teach you the fundamentals of using Windows NT/2000; how to modify the Windows NT/2000 desktop; and file, document, and folder management using Windows NT/2000 Explorer. Ten hours.

  11. Word Processing 101 (Using WordPerfect 5.1+ for DOS)

    Prerequisites: Keyboarding 101 and DOS 101. This introductory course will teach document layout; creating, editing, and formatting documents; various types of tabbing and indenting; moving, copying, and deleting text; printing; using the spell checker and the thesaurus; creating footnotes; and more. Emphasis will be given to use of word processing in an educational setting. Ten hours.

  12. Word Processing 111 (Using Wordperfect 6.1 for Windows)

    Prerequisites: Keyboarding 101, DOS 101, and Windows 101. This introductory course will teach document layout; creating, editing, and formatting documents; various types of tabbing and indenting; moving, copying, and deleting text; printing; using the spell checker and the thesaurus; creating footnotes; and more. Emphasis will be given to use of word processing in an educational setting. Ten hours.

  13. Word Processing 121 (Using MS Word 97 for Windows)

    Prerequisites: Keyboarding 101, DOS 101, and Windows 101. This introductory course will teach document layout; creating, editing, and formatting documents; various types of tabbing and indenting; moving, copying, and deleting text; printing; using the spell checker and the thesaurus; creating footnotes; and more. Emphasis will be given to use of word processing in an educational setting. Ten hours.

  14. Word Processing 131 (Using Word 2000)

    Prerequisites: Keyboarding 101, and Windows 111, 121, or 131. This introductory course will teach document layout; creating, editing, and formatting documents; various types of tabbing and indenting; moving, copying, and deleting text; printing; using the spell checker and the thesaurus; creating footnotes; and more. Emphasis will be given to use of word processing in an educational setting. Ten hours.

  15. Spreadsheet 101 (Using Quattro Pro for DOS)

    Prerequisites: DOS 101. This introductory course will teach the basic principles and techniques of spreadsheet software. You will learn how to enter and edit data; the difference in labels and values as well as formulas and functions, how to work with ranges of cells, how to preview and print spreadsheets. Emphasis will be given to use of spreadsheets in an educational setting. Ten hours.

  16. Spreadsheet 111 (Using Quattro Pro for Windows)

    Prerequisites: DOS 101 and Windows 101. This introductory course will teach the basic principles and techniques of spreadsheet software. You will learn what a spreadsheet is and what it can be used for (with emphasis on educational uses). You will learn about labels and values, formulas and functions, how to enter and edit data, how to work with ranges of cells, how to preview and print spreadsheets. Ten hours.

  18. Spreadsheet 131 (Using Excel 2000 for Windows)

    Prerequisites: Keyboarding 101, and Windows 111, 121, or 131. This introductory course will teach the basic principles and techniques of spreadsheet software. You will learn what a spreadsheet is and what it can be used for (with emphasis on educational uses). You will learn about labels and values, formulas and functions, how to enter and edit data, how to work with ranges of cells, how to preview and print spreadsheets. Ten hours.

  19. Internet 101 (Internet Basics)

    Prerequisites: None. In this class you will gain a basic understanding of PeachNet and the Internet as well as terms used in connection with the Internet. You will learn about electronic mailing lists and how you can subscribe to them to exchange information in your areas of interest with others. You will learn terms like Gopher, Archie, Veronica, Yahoo, Telnet, URL, http, and TCP/IP. You will learn how to use FTP to get files from remote locations. In addition, you will go "surfing on the information superhighway" using a browser (Netscape) as you learn how to access the vast amount of information available to those with Internet connections. Six hours.

  20. Internet 102 (Finding Educational Resources on the Internet)
    (faculty and administrators only)

    Prerequisites: Internet 101. Educational resources available through the Internet are varied and extensive. In this class you will learn how to find and access materials prepared by other educators, how to find collections of data from research and government sources, how to locate library information, and how to search for materials on many different subjects. Gopher and WWW indexes and search engines will be used. Three hours.

  21. Web Page101 (Writing Web Pages for the Internet) (faculty and administrators and support staff only.

    Prerequisites: Competence with word processing skills, use of Notepad (a text editor), and Windows environment, including ease of navigation within the folder and file structure. Experience using the Internet and Netscape or Internet Explorer essential. This is an introductory class for those who wish to publish information on the World Wide Web. Simple web pages, using background colors and/or images, formatted text, hypertext links to other locations on the Internet, links to information within pages, and images will be designed and created. HTML Editors will be used in class. Ten hours.

  22. Web Page111 (Creating Web Pages with FrontPage for Windows) (faculty and administrators and support staff only.

    Prerequisites: Competence with word processing skills, use of Windows environment, including ease of navigation within the folder and file structure. Experience using the Internet and Internet Explorer essential. This is an advanced class for those who wish to publish information on the World Wide Web. Simple web pages, using background colors and/or images, formatted text, hypertext links to other locations on the Internet, links to information within pages, and images will be designed and created. HTML Editors will be used in class. Ten hours.

  23. Presentations 111 (Creating Presentations Using PowerPoint for Windows)

    Prerequisites: Windows 101 or 111. Learn how to create presentations using Microsoft's PowerPoint. Some of the area's covered are selecting backgrounds, using templates, using graphics, importing information from word processors, changing colors, working with slides in different views, adding transition and builds, and more. Six hours.

  24. Presentations 131 (Using PowerPoint 2000)

    Prerequisites: Keyboarding 101, and Windows 111, 121, or 131. Learn how to create presentations using Microsoft's PowerPoint. Some of the area's covered are selecting backgrounds, using templates, using graphics, importing information from word processors, changing colors, working with slides in different views, adding transition and builds, and more. Six hours.

  25. Desktop Publishing 101 (Using PageMaker 6.1)

    Prerequisites: Keyboarding 101, DOS 101, and Windows 101 or 111. This introductory course will teach document layout; creating, editing, and formatting documents. You will learn the basic principles of desktop publishing including how to develop quality printed material that merges text (words, headings, titles) and graphics (pictures, illustrations, and graphs). Ten hours.

  26. Desktop Publishing 131 (Using Publisher 2000)

    Prerequisites: Keyboarding 101, and Windows 111, 121, or 131.  This introductory course will teach document layout; creating, editing, and formatting documents. You will learn the basic principles of desktop publishing including how to develop quality printed material that merges text (words, headings, titles) and graphics (pictures, illustrations, and graphs). Ten hours.

  27. Data Base101 (Using Access 97 for Windows)

    Prerequisite: Windows 101 or 111. This introductory course will teach the basic principles and techniques of database software. You will learn what a database is and what it can be used for (with emphasis on educational uses). You will create a database using design and datasheet views. You will learn about fields, how to use unique identifiers, and how to preview and print databases. Ten hours.

  28. Data Base131 (Using Access 2000)

    Prerequisite: Keyboarding 101, and Windows 111, 121, or 131. This introductory course will teach the basic principles and techniques of database software. You will learn what a database is and what it can be used for (with emphasis on educational uses). You will create a database using design and datasheet views. You will learn about fields, how to use unique identifiers, and how to preview and print databases. Ten hours.

  29. Web Based Training 131 (Using Blackboard Vista)

    Prerequisite:
    Keyboarding 101, and Windows 111, 121, or 131. This introductory course will teach the basic principles and techniques of working with web based training. You will learn what Blackboard Vista is and what it can be used for (with emphasis on educational uses). You will learn about designing and setup of a Blackboard Vista course and designing web based test.  You will create a Blackboard Vista course in class.  Ten hours.
