Computer Vocabulary Quiz 7

An online self-grading quiz to help students prepare Computer Skills Test. Written by parent Lee Ryan, former Webmaster and retired software engineer. September 2001.

1.  Making files smaller with compression software/returning compressed or "zipped up" files back to their original state.  

2.  The effect that technology has on local, state, national or international affairs over a period of time.

3.  Consists of applications of the principles established in the various  physical sciences (chemistry, mechanics, mineralogy, etc.) to manufacturing processes. 1. The practical application of science to commerce or industry. 2: The discipline dealing with the art or science of applying scientific knowledge to practical problems (applied science) e.g., computers, digital cameras, scanners, modems, networks, data video projectors, voice digitizers/synthesizers, touch screens, joysticks/controllers, MIDI interfaces, probe-ware, etc.

7. Policies adopted by school districts to address acceptable Internet usage. It is an agreement between the user (students and/or teachers) and the school and/or  school district requiring responsible use of Internet access. Typically these agreements are signed for students by their parents or guardian. 

8.  Software that makes files smaller.

9.  Online encyclopedias and other informational material found on the Internet.

10.  Uniform Resource Locator; commonly known as the address of a website.

11.  A page created for World Wide Web Internet use using HTML programming and other computer languages.

12.  Encyclopedias, Internet, books, journals, magazines, newspapers, etc.  where information is provided in a variety of topics.

13.  A software program that will assist the user in producing an outline.

14.  A destructive computer program similar to a virus that does not reproduce itself. It acts based on a predetermined event.

15.  Technologies that are in the developmental stages, not in widespread use or have not been invented yet.

16.  Special software or hardware designed to protect a private computer system from unauthorized access.


17.  Sweet snacks. Also the collective name for files stored on your hard drive by your Web browser that hold information about your browsing habits, like what sites you have visited, which newsgroups you have read, etc. Many view these files as an invasion of privacy.

18.  Frequently Asked Questions - a collection of common questions and answers on a particular subject.

19.  Three different picture file formats.  The abbreviations are also used as the file extensions and stand for 1) Joint Photographic Experts Group, 2) Graphics Interchange Format and 3) Bitmap file. Note: "JPEG" and "JPG" refer to the same type of picture file.

20.  The world's largest operating system and application software development company. Products include Windows 95/98/2000/NT/XP, the MS Office Suite, the MS Internet Explorer. Founded by Bill Gates.

21.  An easy to remember name or phrase which allows you to reference Internet sites without knowing the true numerical address.  Also used to identify the host or specific machine within a domain -- for example, cnn.com is one of these within the .com domains.

22. A program which runs on one's computer which provides for the viewing of World Wide Web pages. Netscape and Microsoft's Internet Explorer are two examples of this type of program.

23.  The first page of a Web Site. Also, the Web site that automatically loads each time you launch your browser.

24. Abbreviation for Internet Service Provider - the company which provides you with a connection to the Internet via either a Dial-up Connection or a Direct Connection.

25.  Noun: unwanted email or other types of Internet messages. Verb: the sending of multiple, sometimes thousands, of unwelcome messages or emails to a newsgroup or to individuals' email addresses to promote a commercial product or Web site.
