SEPTEMBER 2006
Literary Circle to host Bernice McFadden to lecture on "Becoming an Author" and her debut novel "Sugar". All reading classes and other campus communities are reading the novel. Thursday, September 14, 2006,in the Savannah Ballroom at 10 a.m.-12 noon.
 
OCTOBER 2006

Beginning in October, the Sharing of Best Teaching Practices will resume.  Faculty will share teaching strategies and new models and paradigms that have had a positive impact on student learning. On Wednesday, October  4th,  Dr. Reginald Gougis in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences will share his findings from his 2006 Mini-grant to explore The Interactive Hybrid Classroom:  Combining Online and Traditional Teaching-Learning Styles.  Come hear him share what went well and what did not and why.  The discussion will take place at 12:00 noon in the Whiting Hall conference Room (Rm 234).  Do not forget to bring your bag lunch.  Complimentary beverages will be served.

Regents' Enhancement Workshop to feature Rev. Dr. Raphael Warnock. Dr. Warnock is the Senior Pastor at the Historic Ebneezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. Friday, October 6, 2006 at 10 a.m.-11 a.m. in the Howard Jordan Business Hall Torian Auditorium. It is open to the public.
The ReWrite Connection staff and Ms. Crissy Terry in Career Services are co-sponsoring a Resume Clinic on Tuesday, October 10th and on Thursday, October 12th, from 10:00 am- 2:00 pm, in Room 103, Whiting Hall.  We also invite all students to take their resumes to the 21st Annual Coastal Georgia University Career Fair, scheduled on October 26th from 12:00 noon-4:00 pm, at the Armstrong Center.

JANUARY 2007
Sharing of Best Teaching Practices, Wednesday, January 17, 2007, 12:00 noon, Whiting Hall 234. Dr. Gloria Shearin, Associate Professor of Liberal Arts; Dr. Bernard Bongang, Assist. Professor of Political Science/Mass Communications; and Mrs. Tara Aikens, Coordinator of Student Retention and Success, will discuss the impact of reading magazines to strengthen students' reading and writing skills. The presenters are recipients of a 2006 Teaching and Learning Mini-Grant. The title of their proposal was "The Magazine Connection: Building Community, Building Knowledge, Building Skills."
 
FEBRUARY 2007
Sharing of Best Teaching Practices,, Wednesday, February 7, 2007 features Dr. Emily Crawford. She will share her findings from her 2006 Mini-grant on Assessing Service Learning Through On-Line Instruction. Come hear her share the benefit of using eLearning as the medium for service learning projects.  The discussion/demonstration wil take place at 12:00 noon in Whiting Hall, room 124.
The Campus Literary Circle, a Title III-funded activity, invites you to hear Bertice Berry, author and lecturer, Friday, February 23, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. in the University Village Recreation Room.

Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu, a national education consultant, will conduct workshops for SSU faculty and students, Wednesday, February 28, 2007.  Dr. Kunjufu has authored numerous books including: Critical Issues in Educating African American Youth; Motivating and Preparing Black Youth for Success; Countering the Conspiracy to Destroy Black Boys and Adam! Where are You? Why Most Black Men Don’t Go To Church.  Dr. Kunjufu will provide two workshops for SSU faculty and students.  The workshops for students, titled Strategies for Academic Success, will be held in the University Ballroom on Wednesday, February 28, at 10:00 am.  The workshop for faculty will be held in The Whiting Hall Auditorium, Room 112 on Wednesday, February 28 at 11:15 am.  The public is invited.

 
MARCH 2007

Sharing of Best Teaching Practices, Wednesday, March 7th. Dr. Jane Philbrick and Mr. Chito Lapena will share their findings from their 2006 Mini-grant Behavior Modeling:  Through Live Video Switching for Presentation Capture.  The findings have been presented at a national conference.  The lecture-demonstration will take place at 12:00 noon in the Whiting Hall Conference Room (Room234). 

 
APRIL 2007
Sharing of Best Teaching Practices, Wednesday, April 4th. Dr. Shinaz G. Jindan, Professor Martin Pierre Pierre and Professor Susan Grayson along with three of their social work students will share Best Teaching and Learning Practices, 12:00 noon in the Whiting Hall Conference Room (room 234).

With the expansion of graduate programs on SSU campus, it is important to differentiate between output and outcome. Social Work programs have built outcome indicators across the curriculum, that engage students out of the classroom. This engagement has created a learning loop that strengthens the program continuously. Come hear from the students how this innovation has led to the learning partnership between students and the teachers.

 
JUNE 2007

On June 20th, 1:00 pm-2:30 pm, CTLAS will hold a web conference titled Aligning Faculty Development with the Needs of Today’s Students:  A Case Study, delivered by Academic Impressions.  The web conference will be held in the Whiting Hall Conference Room (Room 234).  Seats are limited.  Call Mrs. Beverly Worlds (356-2178) or e-mail her (worldsb@savstate.edu) to reserve your seat. The Center for Teaching and Learning will host a demo session on how to use Elluminate Live product to enhance online learning and academic advisement , to conduct interviews of prospective employees before their campus visits, and to make consultants and guest speakers available to large audiences for a smaller fee. We are Pleased to announce an exciting new opportunity for full-time faculty and staff at both of our universities to work together on what we expected will be some extremely worthwhile projects: AASU and SSU Collaborative Teaching and Research Grants.

The aim of this grant competition is to strengthen the quality of teaching and learning and/or foster research and scholarship at our two institutions. You may, therefore, want to consider opportunities for team teaching on both campuses or for field trips involving students from two classes. Perhaps you have a community project in mind, one that has a service-learning component. Or you may have an idea for a collaborative research project. The range of project options and opportunities is as wide as your imaginations.

Please not that the maximum grant available is $2,500. The deadline for submitting applications is December 3, 2007, and projects must be implemented during the spring semester of 2008. January 2008
On Wednesday, January 16th, Dr. Emanuel M. Naniuzeyi, Associate Professor of Political Science and a Title III 226 Teaching and Learning Grant recipient, will share the findings from his study "Teaching Global Issues Through a Role Playing Approach." The discussion will be held in the Whiting Hall Conference Room (Rm 234) at noon. Dr. Naniuzeyi will show the effectiveness of active learning with authentic learning activities over the traditional lecture approach to teaching this course. Also come hear some of the students' testimonies regarding active learning.

On Tuesday,  April 29th,  Dr. Lisa Yount,  Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Critical Thinking in the Department of Liberal Arts, will engage faculty in discussion on “The Use of Multi-Media Elements to Enhance Classroom and Online Pedagogy.”  In an age with much technology, faculty may be tempted to infuse technology in instruction “ just because we can.”  Come hear Professor Yount discuss  the importance of pedagogy as the driving force to infuse instruction with technology.  The discussion will take place at 12:00 noon in the Whiting Hall Conference Room (Rm 234).  This presentation is the courtesy of information gathered at a 2008 Learning Resources Network (LERN) faculty development institute made possible by Dean Jane Gates  and the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.

June 2008

On Friday, June 6th, from 9:00 am -12:00 noon, Dr. Michael S. Heard, Associate Dean of the University College at Kennesaw State University, will facilitate a workshop/discussion on the feasibility of creating a university at SSU  in Whiting Hall 103.  Kennesaw is nationally recognized for its First Year Program of Excellence,  housed in KSU’s University College.      Dr. Heard will share the benefits of having a university college at KSU and the problems associated with creating one.  He will discuss an  array of topics:  the KSU 1101 seminar (equivalent to SSU’s Freshman Year Experience courses), the Early Start program that allows provisionally admitted students to complete their remediation prior to fall semester, the Early Alert Program to salvage students in academic trouble,  learning communities,  KSU’s current decentralized academic advising and   plans for centralization,  tenure status for University College faculty, and many more.
