This course is designed primarily for students who have a Learning Support (LS) reading requirement but no LS English requirement and who, therefore, are precluded by policies of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia from enrolling in English1101, the first sequence of freshman English composition. This course teaches the development of the multi-paragraph essay and vocabulary skills.

Course Content: Basic Composition integrates reading, writing and critical thinking by looking at writing as both product and process. Students will compose essays both inside and outside of the classroom using expository and rhetorical writing methods. Vocabulary development will be a course pervasive in which definitions will be taught in context (connotation) and in isolation (denotation).
 
Learning Objectives: Students will (1) construct clear and well-developed essays using the conventions of edited American English, and (2) develop a college vocabulary to improve t heir written and oral diction.

  1.     50%final examinations (40% final essay and 10% final vocabulary test)

Attendance Policy: Because of the importance of this course, students may not be absent more than the number of days a class meets per week.
 
Course Expectations: To ensure student success, the following will be observed:
 
1.    Students will assume responsibility to e-mail the instructor(s) immediately whenever they experience difficulty with an assignment.
 
2.    Students will participate in the Discussion in a responsible and timely manner to ensure group connectivity and to contribute to the exchange of ideas.
 
  1. Students will post their individual responses to the topic no later than the third day of the assignment week, allowing more time for questions and follow-up.
  2. Students will check the discussion board periodically during the week, beginning with the first day of the assignment week, to respond to their classmates' comments as well as to pose questions for clarity and to receive responses to their questions.
  3. Students will use academic writing in the Discussion Tool (no abbreviated text messaging).
  4. Students will observe appropriate Netiquette during the discussions.
 
3.    Students will participate in the scheduled chats on the agreed upon and during the agreed upon time.*
 
4.    Students will submit all assignments on time. In the event that a student is absent and has documented proof of illness, family emergency, or official University business, the student may arrange to make up the missed assignment(s) at the rescheduled time. Otherwise, late assignments will be reduced by one letter grade.
 
5.    Students will practice honesty and integrity in their course work. Students will complete and submit their own online formative quizzes and tests in order to prepare for the proctored summative final examinations, which will be administered in class.
 
6.    Students will be on time for class every day. Excessive tardiness will not be tolerated. Three counts of tardiness will constitute one absence for a day and two counts of tardiness for an evening class.
 
7.    Students will work only on the course subject matter during a class period.
 
8.    Students will bring textbooks and other necessary materials to class.
 
9.    Students will be focused on the assignment, lecture or discussion. Any form of disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.
 
10.    Students will keep their conference appointments and arrive for any scheduled tests or make-up tests at the designated time.
 
11.    Students will read and adhere to the course outline as well as the class activity calendar.
 
12.    Students will not bring disruptive electronic devices to class. Cell phones in vibrate or silent mode are permissible.
 
13.    Students will not bring any children to the classroom.
