SAVANNAH STATE UNIVERSITY
Center for Teaching, Learning and Academic Support

student academic assistance program

PLACEMENT & EXIT REQUIREMENTS

Students shall have three semesters or three attempts per area to remediate deficiencies, provided that the student consistently demonstrates satisfactory academic progress. Any developmental student whose academic standing is less than that which is accepted by the University is subject to academic suspension even though the student may not have exhausted all three attempts. A developmental student who is also enrolled in credit courses is governed by the University’s policy on academic standing if his/her GPA is not in compliance with guidelines. A developmental student who is enrolled in all three Learning Support courses (English, reading, and mathematics) and who fails to exit two or three courses must demonstrate satisfactory progress via class average(s) before sitting for the posttests and teacher evaluation(s) in order to be in good academic standing. Students not in good standing will be placed on academic probation for a semester and issued a warning from the department. Any developmental student who is in good academic standing but who fails to exit any one or more courses within the time allotted shall be suspended from Savannah State University and any other unit of the University System of Georgia for three years. However, a student may appeal a suspension to the Program Director, provided the student has only one Learning Support area to complete, has a class average of at least 80 or above, and obtains a letter of recommendation from the student’s recent instructor of the course that needs to be completed. If the student fails to exit again, a second appeal for a fifth attempt may be granted provided the student has maintained at least the same academic requirements for the first appeal. However, the student may enroll only in the remaining Learning Support course. If the student fails to pass the course after this appeal, the student will be suspended for three years.

After a three-year suspension, a student may reapply for admission, subject to meeting the institution’s requirements for readmission. Any student readmitted must be retested on the placement COMPASS and Writing Sample and placed accordingly in the appropriate classes.

A student may not accumulate more than 20 hours of degree credit before finishing his Learning Support requirements. Any student who does accumulate 20 credit hours or more and who has not successfully completed the required Learning Support courses may enroll only in those said courses until the Learning Support requirements are successfully completed.

Students must subscribe to the campus webmail to remain connected  to their Learning Support advisor and to remain abreast of the preceding Learning Support and academic status issues. Hard letters will not be mailed each semester.

No degree credit will be awarded for Learning Support course work. Institutional credit only will be awarded.

Students who score below 23 on the math subtest are placed in the entry level course Math 0097.  Students who score above 22 but below 37 are placed in the exit level course Math 0099. Students who score below 60 on the English subtest are placed in English 0099 on exit level course.  Students who score below 74 on the reading subtest are placed in Reading 0099, also on exit level course.

Developmental students who maintain a C average or better throughout the semester are eligible to sit for the exit examination(s). To exit mathematics, a student must earn a score of 37 on the post-COMPASS. To exit reading, a student must earn a score of 74 or higher on the post-COMPASS. To exit English, a student must pass the Writing Sample as well as earn a score of 60 or higher on the post-COMPASS.

Once students earn a passing score on any part of the English placement examination (the COMPASS and Writing Assessment), they need not retake that part during the post-examination.  Similarly, students who earn a passing score on any part of the English post-examination need not retake that part during subsequent semesters.

Any student who score within five points of the minimum passing COMPASS score for a subject area (math, reading or English) are eligible to retest, whether the examination is a placement or post-examination.

The following final grades will be issued:

S (Satisfactory) Met all requirements in Math 0097. Recommended for Math 0099
A, B, C Satisfied class work in an exit level 0099 course and passed COMPASS.
IP (In Progress)

Sat for exit examination(s)  (COMPASS and/or Writing Assessment), but did not pass.  Must enroll in course again.

I Incomplete grade due to non-academic reasons
F (Failure)

Student failed class work. Must repeat course.

W (Withdrew)

Student withdrew or was administratively

withdrawn without penalty before the

deadline.

WF (Withdrew, Failing)

Student withdrew from a course after the

deadline for penalty and was failing at time

of withdrawal.

V (Auditing)

Student does not receive quality points or a grade.

When a student withdraws from a course before mid-semester, his/her entire registration will be cancelled. A student cannot drop/withdraw from a Learning Support (LS) course without withdrawing from the university. This practice is to ensure that no LS students earn more than 20 credit hours while he/she is enrolled in LS course(s).

If a student does not report to any LS class before the deadline to report NAs (students who never attended class), the student will be reported as NA to the Registrar, and his/her entire registration will be cancelled.

When an I is assigned, a student must be in good academic standing when extenuation circumstances occur that preclude a student from completing course requirements.

A WF is assigned to a student who stops attending class after mid-semester.

A WF is counted as a semester attempt.

Any student needing a Reading 0099 course cannot enroll in college level social, natural, or physical science courses or college-level English until remedial reading requirements have been satisfied. A student may enroll in the enrichment composition course (ENGL 0199), which carries only institutional credit, but which prepares students for success in the freshmen English series. However, a student must still fulfill his or her CPC deficiencies in social science, natural science, etc. Courses used for CPC deficiency do not count as part of the core curriculum.

Click Here for Suggested courses for Reading 0099 students.

Any student needing Mathematics 0099 cannot enroll in college level mathematics, physics, chemistry, or any science courses with a prerequisite of college-level mathematics until remedial mathematics requirements have been satisfied.

Any student enrolled in 0099 English cannot enroll in college-level English.

These restrictions mean that limited admit students are not guaranteed a full class load as may be required to qualify for some forms of financial aid.
