The philosophy of the Learning Support is to serve developmental learners who have been provisionally admitted to the University. The component offers a curriculum to help developmental learners adapt to the academic challenges of the college classroom. In order to facilitate this growth and development, each of the three discipline areas (English, reading, and mathematics) has created objectives designed to promote the overall mission of the Program and the University. They are to strengthen the reading skills, the mathematical skills, and the oral and written communicative skills of provisionally admitted students. These objectives are based on the desire of Student Academic Assistance faculty and staff to support the students’ pursuit of academic excellence and life survival skills. Entering students who have demonstrated marked deficiencies in English, reading, and mathematics as indicated by their performance on the University’s placement examinations are channeled into Learning Support. The non-traditional students are exempt from the SAT/ACT admission criteria. Also, Presidential exceptions are students who, in very special and rare circumstances, the President of the University may grant exceptions to the CPC and FI requirements. Students must show exceptional promise for success and only a few students can be admitted under this category. Students in the above categories must sit for the COMPASS Examination. Their scores determine placement into the developmental curriculum. Therefore, a “developmental learner” is any student whose score on either portion of the COMPASS, or Placement Writing Sample does not satisfy placement requirements for exemption from Learning Support. Such a student must take appropriate corresponding Learning Support courses (courses numbered 0097 and 0099). Every student in the Learning Support is advised by an assigned academic advisor until he/she satisfies Learning Support requirements. |
